Produce or perish
published: Thursday | April 17, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

The handwriting is on the wall. Jamaicans must all return to the land to produce all that we can for the preservation of our people and our economy. The Haitian riots are a sign of the disquiet within the bosom of poor people all across the world.

Every man, woman and child in this country that has even a square of land should be encouraged to plant a fruit tree, vegetables, yam, pumpkin and whatever can be used for food.

Non-organic fertiliser is expensive, but we do have organic fertiliser available for a little more than J$1,000 per bag. Encouraging the production of organic foods is better for our people. Marigold can be planted among crops, and waste from the kitchen can be used to feed the soil. I have evidence that this makes for healthier plants.

Soaps and lotions

We must cease destroying marijuana plants. Why not export to countries that have legalised this plant, and pay the farmers for their hard work? Why not tap into the pharmaceutical world, market the oil of this plant that is supposed to be the best in the world because it is said that it produces omega, three, six and nine. How about the manufacture of textiles, soaps and lotions?

We have to produce or perish for we cannot depend on other nations for support when hunger looms on the horizon, soon it will be every nation for itself.

I am, etc.,
