Avoiding the abyss
published: Thursday | April 17, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I have come to the realisation that the voice of reason is not being heard as loudly and forcefully as it should be. We live in a country whose anthem echoes the sentiments of integrity, justice and equality for all, the belief in God and respectability for all citizens regardless of colour, class or ethnicity. Yet, we con-tinuously see the contradictions having precedence. I speak generally of all the social inequalities, insensitivity, dishonesty and inequity that plague every stratum of society.

We have reached a stage in our country where compromising one's values, beliefs and integrity is the 'in thing'. We need to take a stance on where we want to see our country going. Every citizen has to decide whether he or she is going to sit by and watch the country slip into the proverbial abyss or raise it up as the summits of the mountains.

Tedious process

Moving Jamaica forward is not a one-time occurrence, it is a continuous and tedious process that is attainable if we desire sustainable growth for our nation.

I implore my peers, they say the future of most, if not all things, are in our hands. So what are we going to do about it? Let us be the change we want to see in the world, let us stand up for truth, righteousness and justice, let us sow good so we can reap good, let us be optimistic about the prosperity of our island and let us hold firm to the values and integrity the great and positive nation builders, parents and teachers have instilled in us. Let us take back Jamaica from the hands of those who mean it no good!

I am, etc.,

SACHA LAMBERT
