Walker, Thomas share riding honours
published: Sunday | April 13, 2008

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

CHAMPION JOCKEY Omar Walker and in-form jockey Devon A. Thomas shared the riding honours with three winners each at Caymanas Park yesterday, Walker taking time out to regain the lead from Shane Ellis in the jockeys' standings.

Walker, 25, not only booted home the highly-fancied ALLIEDFORCE in the graded stakes feature for the Legal Light Trophy, but opened the card with a post-to-post win aboard 9-5 chance UNBREAKABLE HEART for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta in the 1200-metre race for three-year-olds (non-winners of two) and 3-5 favou-rite CHOSEN ONE for trainer Lawrence Freemantle in the fourth race over the straight five course.

'Little John' moves up

Thomas, who is popularly called 'Papa' and 'Little John', moved up to joint fourth in the standings with 13 wins, this after booting home 9-5 chance NIJINSKY'S WAR for trainer Donovan Raymond in the Morty Heron Memorial Cup (claiming $260,000 - $230,000) over 1820 metres, 7-2 chance SONG BOOK for trainer Victor Williams in the eighth and 8-5 favourite MOST WANTED for Freemantle in the closing race for the Roderick 'Pilot' Francis Memorial Trophy (claiming $170,000) over 1200 metres.

Walker thus pushed his season's tally to 36, moving from third to first in the standings, one ahead of the 2000 champion Ellis who won the supporting feature for the Howard Hamilton Trophy aboard 3-5 favourite EXPLOSIVE PEAK, and two ahead of Dane Nelson who sat out a one-day suspension.

The 2006 St. Leger and Governor's Cup winner ALLIEDFORCE (6-5) duly turned the tables on his November 10 Superstakes conqueror MAJOR MAYER, the 4-5 favourite, in the Legal Light Trophy contested by six horses over the circular nine course.

Never far off the pace in fourth as 4-1 shot IVAN THE TERRIBLE made most ahead of THE SMOKER (6-1) and MAJOR MAYER close up, ALLIEDFORCE mounted his challenge three-wide at the final bend. Getting into top gear from early in the straight, he surged past MAJOR MAYER a furlong out and proceeded to win by four lengths, completing a hat-trick of wins to be unbeaten in three starts this season, all with Walker aboard.

Seasonal debutp>MAJOR MAYER, ridden by 3kg claiming apprentice Rayan Wilson, led on the inside approaching the final bend on his seasonal debut, but found the winner too strong up the lane and had to settle for second.

ALLIEDFORCE had previously won the Zaleucus Trophy (open allowance) over 1800 metres on March 8. Owned by Donald Williams and trained by the quiet veteran Noel Ennevor, ALLIEDFORCE is a five-year-old chestnut horse by Market Rally out of the Element mare Royal Colours, bred by HAM Stables Limited. This was his 10th win from 24 career starts with total stakes of $6.7 million. Ennevor said: "Alliedforce has an uncanny resemblance to Legal Light from when he was a yearling and still looks like him today. It was therefore a good omen that he won the Legal Light Trophy.

"Although pretty consistent in the past, he is clearly enjoying his racing this year. He has struck up a winning partnership with Omar Walker and should continue to deliver in the months ahead," Ennevor said.
