Shiv moving up among WI greats

Shivnarine Chanderpaul ... fourth on West Indies' all-time Test run-scoring list. - FILE

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

WEST INDIES batsman Shiv Chanderpaul is beaming after becoming the fourth highest runscorer on the all-time West Indies batting list.

He achieved the feat after his unbeaten 86 in the second innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Queen's Park Oval, which the West Indies won by six wickets to level the series.

The 33-year-old Chanderpaul now has 7,559 runs, surpassing legendary openers Desmond Haynes (7,487) and Gordon Greenidge (7,558). He now sits behind Brian Lara (11,953), Sir Vivian Richards (8,540) and Sir Garfield Sobers (8,032).

"It is a huge honour and great delight for me to have my name among these great players. These are some of the all-time greats in the history of cricket and I'm happy that I can be listed among them," the compact left-hander said.

Close on the run chart

"I knew I was close in the run chart but that is not what I was looking at during the match. I just wanted to bat and bat and bat and help to win this match against Sri Lanka.

"I was happy with the way (Ramnaresh) Sarwan was going and I decided to settle in and support him all the way."

The duo shared a record fourth-wicket stand of 157 which steered West Indies to a series-levelling win on Sunday.

Sarwan, who stroked a brilliant 102, was named Man of the Match and Man of the Series for his 311 runs in the series.

Chanderpaul said the aim for the West Indies was to be consistent and to compete with all teams on the world stage.

"The guys are coming along very well and learning the game. As batsmen we need to recognise our role in the team and always look to be consistent. We have to put the runs on the board so the bowlers can have something to work with," Chanderpaul said.

"The bowlers are also doing a good job and once we give them the runs, they will be able to give us the 20 wickets," he added.
