'We need to be more concerned about our youth'
published: Thursday | April 10, 2008

GRANGE

The nation's adults have been called upon to invest in the Jamaica's children in order to achieve great gains for economic development in the future.

Announcing this year's theme for National Child Month, 'Children: Today's Investment - Tomorrow's Gain', CEO of the Child Development Agency (CDA), Alison Anderson, said excellent rewards may be reaped for the country's development if more children are cared for.

Anderson was speaking at the Tuesday's launch of National Child Month at the Institute of Jamaica, downtown Kingston.

She said investing in the nation's children should not only be viewed in terms of financial support, but also being caregivers to future leaders.

"Invest in love, in care, in understanding; encourage them, read to them, ask them how their day was, these are the things that matter," said Anderson.

Youth's welfare

Olivia Grange, minister of information, culture, youth and sports, told the gathering that there was reason to be concerned about the welfare of the youth.

Noting the many ills that affect them, such as violence, Grange said the Government was moving to implement policies that would protect the children. Police statistics show that, in 2007 and during the previous year, 65 children were killed annually.

Grange also said plans are afoot for the development of a parenting commission, being spearheaded by the Ministry of Education.

"Persons are explicitly concerned about the welfare of our children," Grange told the audience which primarily comprises young people.

Child Month has been celebrated every May since 1953.
