Towering fourteen-year-old goal shooter Mavadeen Anderson, who stands at 6' 9", led defending cham-pions Jamaica to an emphatic 45-6 win over hosts Antigua and Barbuda in the morning session at the 10th annual Jean Pierre Caribbean Netball Association (CNA) Under-16 tournament yesterday.
The win was the third in a row for Jamaica, who have won this tournament on all but one occasion when they have competed.
Anderson got off to a brilliant start in the first quarter, netting seven goals. In the second quarter, she scored nine shots, followed by 12 in the third quarter. Overall, Anderson scored 28 goals, with assists from Samantha White (9), Deneen Taylor (5) and Alanna Chambers (3).
Team manager Cora Ricketts stated that the players had improved significantly since their initial game at the tournament.
"We see the girls developing and playing better each time they play," Ricketts said.
Good improvement
"Anderson has also shown good improvement. She is holding the ball, jumping and balancing better, hence increasing her tally of shots," she said.
Following its opening day 38-10 victory over Dominica on Sunday, the Jamaicans rushed to their second win on Monday night when they crushed 53-12.
Anderson led the way for Jamaica with 22 goals and Chambers 20, as they stayed on course for a title showdown with Trinidad and Tobago, who have also won three straight matches.
The Trinidadians beat Dominica 36-9 on Monday night with leading contributions from Nailah Coltes, with 20 points and Samantha Wallace 13.
In the morning session yesterday, Trinidad and Tobago beat St Lucia 56-22 for a third straight win with Wallace again leading the way with an impressive 45 goals from 51 attempts.
Barbados also won, beating Grenada 25-21 in a closely fought encounter, to rebound for their loss against St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), and SVG scored a 27-6 win over Dominica, to complement its 27-23 win over Barbados yesterday morning.
