JPS expo to come alive in Montego Bay
published: Wednesday | April 9, 2008

Western Jamaica is set for an explosion of scientific displays and experimentation with the western leg of the JPS Science & Technology Expo 2008, to be held tomorrow at the Wexford Hotel, in Montego Bay, St James.

The expo, held in association with the Scientific Research Council (SRC) and the Association of Science Teachers of Jamaica (ASTJ), will see a range of participants from primary, secondary and tertiary level institutions, showcasing scientific innovations, inventions and displays. Special categories include Best Use of Indigenous Material, Best Illustration of Energy Use, and Most Innovative Display.

According to JPS, the first in the series of expos across the island had a highly successful run in Mandeville, at the Golf View hotel.

Exciting event

"The Western Expo is also expected to be an exciting event, showcasing a range of exhibits, including production of ethanol from algae, cooking with solar power, and organoponics - among many others," the light and power company said.

Last year's western winners included Mount Alvernia High for a hydroponics display; Springfield All-Age for purifying water that can be safely consumed by humans; Knockalva Agricultural College who produced biofuel; and Wait-a-Bit All-Age whose team created dasheen paper.

Chief judge at the recently held Mandeville leg of the JPS Science & Technology Expo, Dr Cliff Riley, noted that judges are looking for creativity and bright ideas. According to Dr Riley, judges are particularly impressed with the use of local materials, adding that viability of the project also adds to the strength of the display.

He further noted that judges keenly assess the level of scientific and technological knowledge of the students sharing on the project, and even give consideration to how well students are able to articulate on the research carried out.

Subsequent to the Western Expo in Montego Bay, the Kingston presentation will take place at the month's end, followed by the National Finals.
