The Editor, Sir:
Thumbs up to Guyana's President Bharrat Jagdeo who "will never negotiate with criminals".
The leaders and peace advocates of Jamaica need to have a talk with President Jagdeo who appears to have a passion to deal with criminals in his country.
Meet with criminals
I have always wondered why we have peace marches; why we meet with warring factions. We should not be meeting with criminals. We should not be bargaining with them, neither out of fear nor favour. They should be hunted and caught and brought to justice. I have to wonder at times, who has the upper hand in this country. We say one thing and we are doing the other.
This country has many laws, but how many of those laws have teeth. Whether or not hanging resumes, the criminals have nothing to fear because they know that the possibility of them getting caught is one, on a scale of one to ten. If they are caught, no one is willing to come forward and give evidence in a court of law, out of fear for their and their families' lives. Justice, as the criminals see it, is being served.
Criminality in Jamaica has climbed to another level; the highest level. It is a network; an organised business. It is full time the police stations and departments have a computer system capable of tracing criminals and their activities. The police stations should be entering reports in a computer; not those enormous old-fashioned books. That practice should be abolished.
I am, etc.,
