NOTE-WORTHY: Airline future
published: Tuesday | April 8, 2008

Airline future

China Air buying Air Jamaica, on the face of it, does not make sense; but think about a couple of factors. Only the Far East airlines are making money. The Chinese middle class is growing at a very fast pace, so if we are to tap into that market air support is needed. China Air's reason is quite clear, it would give them a new route into the United States.

Bad behaviour

I believe many of us well-thinking Jamaicans desire better behaviour than we have seen demonstrated by some of our politicians in the House of Parliament and elsewhere in recent times. The shouting matches, the character assassinations, and the outward display of anger and hostility cannot contribute positively to the making of healthy and sound decisions for this nation. Why can't arguments be advanced and debated in a civil way? I would think that civility is the basis on which the best decisions for the country (if that is the aim) would be arrived at. Do these leaders have the moral authority to speak to and make policies pertaining to the subject? I think not. I believe those who are guilty of improper conduct should consider the far-reaching implications of their actions, and endeavour to make a change. Jamaica cannot continue on this downward slide.

Cleanliness

I want to second Mr Powell, 4/07/08, and his idea for more cleanliness - clean is a state of mind that is manifested publicly - so, clean hands plus clean hearts equal clean minds/environments. Then there is the biblical reference of course re cleanliness equals godliness. So with all the churches that are in Jamaica (more per square feet than anywhere else in the world according to Guiness Book of World Records), we should be the cleanest place on Earth - right?

Our hypocrisy will be our downfall (get real Jamaica!). Do they teach cleanliness in the homes, in the churches, in the schools, etc? Do we live by example or what?

Surname query

I was just doing a search on the Web, as I often do, using my surname which is SPREDDIE. Imagine my surprise when I saw your article 'Phenomenal women', with the name Petrona Spreddie as a nominee. My name is Carole and I live in Surrey, England and know little of my Jamaican heritage and family. I would be so grateful if anyone with this surname, who knew my father Mr Cephas Spreddie (now deceased) could send me an email at carolemay@blueyonder.co.uk. I hope to hear from you soon.
