The Editor, Sir:What a disappointment Robert Mugabe has been to Rhodesia/ Zimbabwe. Mugabe was a wonderful example of putting his life, on the line to free Rhodesia from Ian Smith, and he accomplished this goal with a lot of help from other African countries, but here again feet of clay comes into play. From being a hero loved by all he has now become the villain.
This is really a tragedy for all Africans. Here is a man who promised much, and indeed Zimbabweans do owe him gratitude for helping to set them free, but what he has now done is to turn over the pail and in so doing lose all his credibility.
I really do believe that he needs help to set him back along the right path, and I wonder why the elder statesmen of Africa, such as Nelson Mandela and Bishop Tutu, do not involve themselves in helping this man, who started out with a moral goal and achieved that goal, but has now lost his way.
I really do not think it is too late for redemption, but he must get help to put him back to where he belongs.
I am, etc.,
