WESTERN BUREAU:
The police say speeding might have led to the three-vehicle collision that claimed the life of a 33-year-old policeman along segment two of the north coast highway in Montego Bay, St James, yesterday.
Detective Sergeant Curtis Ashman, of the Organised Crime Unit, was reportedly driving an unmarked Toyota Corolla service vehicle towards Montego Bay, where he was scheduled to attend a court hearing.
Lost control
It is reported that about 10:40 a.m., the policeman was driving in the vicinity of the Flankers community, when he lost control of the car, which then hit a median on the highway and overturned.
The policeman's car then collided with a truck as well as a Suzuki motor car.
"He was an active policeman who was always available to work and the entire (Jamaica) Constabulary Force is in mourning over his passing," said Area One Police chaplin, the Reverend Courtney Walters.
More than five persons have lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes on segment two of the north coast highway, which runs from the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to Falmouth, Trelawny.
The driver of the truck who was involved in the collision was injured.
