Hassled in Negril
I have travelled to your island for many years and love all of its riches, but I am now looking for another island without so much begging. I am a single woman and feel very uncomfortable on the beach, especially during the evening hours. I save all year long to travel for one or two weeks to Negril, only to be constantly hassled by people, especially the gigolos.
I was also defrauded by a taxi driver from the area, taking my money with me to the cambio and not giving it back. What a shame! Don't you think that the good people of Jamaica should know why tourism is down in Negril?

On target
Re the 'pork barrel' commentary: The Gleaner was on target. The distribution of scarce resources in a discretionary manner by MPs runs the risk of creating immovable incumbents.
Funds meant for these purposes should be distributed through a transparent request for proposal system, which evaluates the merits and cost-effectiveness of a proposal, ranks it in order of established priority, and apply the funding in a controlled environment.

Noise control
I take this opportunity to commend the police commissioner for the decision to impose strict noise-control measures to help the communities to live peacefully.
It is important to note that there are several health hazards associated with exposure to noise in excess of 85dB (decibels) for prolonged periods. These are loss of hearing, loss of sleep, agitation, anxiety and palpitations. It is also associated with violent behaviour. I hope the intended regulations are enforced strictly, as it was due from a long, long time.
