Jonathan Grant to padlock gate
published: Tuesday | March 18, 2008

Spanish Town, St Catherine:

A decision has been taken to lock the rear gate at the Jonathan Grant High School after an attack on students of the institution last week.

The announcement was made yesterday at a meeting between parents and guardians of the six grade 11 boys who were beaten at the De La Vega City Community Centre.

During the meeting, it was also revealed that at least two of the six students had suffered relapses and were taken for further treatment.

In the meantime, the teacher implicated in the controversy, Marlon Black, is scheduled to appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court today.

Security guard killed

Black was picked up at the scene of the beating by the police. It has been alleged that Black called the men from the community to accost the boys after his cellphone went missing.

The incident is only one of a series of incidents of school violence which have gripped the nation in recent weeks.

Yesterday, the 16-year-old schoolboy who was on Friday charged in the death of a security guard appeared in court and was further remanded as the police are yet to complete their investigations.

It is alleged that the juvenile was in a tussle with another boy when the security guard, who was stationed at the Robert Lightbourne High School, attempted to intervene. The security guard was hit on the back of the head with a piece of board and later died in hospital.

The accused is to return to court on April 7.

On Friday, five boys aged 10 to 11 years old who were before the Old Harbour Resident Magistrate's Court for allegedly using broken bottles to stab another boy repeatedly for his lunch money were taken to the Horizon Remand Centre.

The boys were remanded as juveniles in need of care and protection as, due to their ages, they could not be charged with felonious wounding of the child they are accused of injuring.
