Edna Manley

Claim to fame: Mother of Jamaica's modern art movement. Wife of National Hero Norman Washington Manley and mother of Prime Minister Michael Manley.

Most noted works: 'Negro Aroused' (1935), 'Pocomania' (1936) and 'Paul Bogle' (1965).

The famous Bogle statue stands before the Morant Bay courthouse where the deacon was tried and convicted in 1865.

Edna Manley was a teacher and co-founder of the Jamaica School of Art which paved the way for many who went on to excel in Jamaican art.

Mentor to the great Jamaican painter Albert Huie. Huie paid tribute to her with his 1940 painting, 'Edna Manley'.

Edna Manley designed the People's National Party's Rising Sun logo.

Died in 1987. Her awards include a 1943 Musgrave Gold Medal and the Order of Merit in 1980.
