Mckenzie
Effective Monday, the Kingston and St Andrew Corpor-ation (KSAC) will suspend for two weeks the towing of illegally parked vehicles by its staff and contractors, Mayor Desmond McKenzie said yesterday.
The Kingston mayor said the policy regarding the towing of vehicles would be reviewed to ensure that both the public and the KSAC were being treated fairly by those carrying out the process.
This is the latest incident in a series of actions, taken by the KSAC, geared at restoring trust in its towing of vehicles within the Corporate Area.
Ban on cops
Earlier this week, McKenzie informed Police Commissioner Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin that motor vehicles seized by the security forces would not be allowed at the KSAC's pound on Barry Street, downtown Kingston.
He said that following reports of questionable practices associated with the towing of illegally parked vehicles, the KSAC had terminated the services of one of its contractors.
The mayor has also launched an investigation into the KSAC's wrecker services to determine whether there has been any collusion to the detriment of the public and the corporation.
McKenzie has also summoned employees of the corporation's traffic department, including wardens and contractors, to a meeting at the KSAC's office today.
The KSAC will use the suspension period to upgrade signs and markers used to warn motorists of no parking and parking zones.
