Job experience hard to get
published: Friday | March 14, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

The purpose of this letter is to share an experience with you and the public. This is the first year of my career and I am finding it very difficult to find employment. I am very much qualified for the positions I am applying for. The problem is that most of these businesses are looking for applicants with three to four years experience. This has been a problem for years for the youths and it is time for a change.

Young adults spend time, money and efforts getting college degrees and then are turned away by the employers due to lack of experience. The question is: At what point are we going to be able to get that experience that is needed? The truth is, very few employers are willing to give us our first job experience.

Age discrimination

In addition, age discrimination is becoming very prominent. You are not deemed mature and responsible if you are not 25 years and older. When and who will break this cycle? Who is looking out for the betterment of the youths?

It is often publicised that the way forward is through education. Meanwhile, qualified young adults cannot get the opportunity to be worthwhile citizens. Instead, we are turning to 'unlawful acts'!

In many cases young graduates are required by our parents to help as breadwinners of our families. How can we uplift our lives and support our families, with all the negative scenarios surrounding our future?

I pose these questions to you all and hope that these issues are taken seriously.

I am, etc.,
