NOTE-WORTHY - Wrong move
published: Friday | March 14, 2008

Wrong move

The decision to take M16s out of the hands of the regular police is going to cost police lives. Gunmen in the garrison communities can now engage non-M16 carrying patrols from extended distances without having to worry about the police returning lethal fire. The next time a gunman opens fire on one of these patrols from 250+ metres, the only thing the police will be able to do is flee or take cover. This is another instance of applying Western societies' standards in a society where criminals carry out urban-style military operations in garrison communities. It should be noted that in many large cities, police now carry M16 or other high-powered weapons in their vehicles as a precaution.

Commish's office

Since the new commissioner of police is making all these so-called positive changes to the force I think it's time he make a change to the location of his office. Now, wouldn't it be nice to see him fighting crime from downtown Kingston? Mr Lewin prove yourself and lobby the Government to move your office downtown within a few months. Let's see how committed you are.

Motorcycle danger

The traffic laws should be amended to make motorcycle riders join the line of traffic like all motor vehicles. This is the practice in most developed countries and it would reduce fatalities in motorcycle operators. If you are coming out of a driveway of a business on to a major roadway heading in the opposite direction of the oncoming traffic and you are being allowed to do so by an oncoming motor vehicle, you run the risk of colliding with a motorcycle who breaks the line of traffic. And the motorcycles are normally going at speeds exceeding the speed limit.

Scotia's contribution

Kindly allow me space to express gratitude to Scotia Bank for the tremendous effort they are making in raising the consciousness about HIV/AIDS and other stigmatised illnesses such as mental health

I am proud of the contribution Scotia Bank is making towards primary schools' debating competition named 'speak up speak out'. It is amazing how we treat people with stigmatized illnesses, but it stops being funny when it starts being you or someone close to you.
