Hinting at his earlier commitment to make the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) the best in the world, Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin says he will be at the forefront of what is to be a complete transformation of Jamaican policing.
Speaking on Tuesday to several sector leaders at the Jamaica Employers' Federation CEO Breakfast at the Hilton Kingston hotel, New Kingston, the police chief said he is at present conducting a strategic review of the JCF.
He said he was committed to a "corruption-free, professional and citizen-focused police force."
"One of the things that I have found is that the police force is not short of many wholesome rules and regulations," he said. "Some are archaic, but much of it has been modernised. But guess what? Nobody follows the rules, everybody does their own thing, and we've got to arrest that and turn it back," he added. He further admitted that corruption was widespread throughout the JCF and that he would also be working to curtail this problem.
"The fact is, there are criminals within the force," he said. Just last Saturday we had to arrest two officers who were on a robbery spree in Montego Bay; two officers who were on interdiction for disciplinary matters."
