The abortion debate - Join the abortion debate!
published: Wednesday | March 12, 2008

A protestor marches during an anti-abortion demonstration in central London, in October last year. The 1967 Abortion Act, which marked its 40th anniversary last year, allows terminations to be carried out up to 24 weeks after conception. However, anti-abortion campaigners argue that medical advances mean that babies have a better chance of survival at 24 weeks than in the past and say the upper limit should now be reduced. - Reuters

The Government is examining possible amendments to the laws relating toabortion in Jamaica. Should abortion be legal? Join the abortion debate.Email us: editor@gleanerjm.com; or fax: 922-6223.

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Sanctioning abortion would seal the fate of innocent girls by sending the message to their violators that it's OK to abuse them because the law will facilitate the destruction of the evidence of their horrible act.

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The act of abortion is a tough case to deal with because, for example, it can be very stressful for a 15-year-old girl to have a baby. The fact that the girl had unprotected sex should not be condoned, but readers should think about the fact that the 15-year-old girl may have been raped and this is a factor of paramount importance. In regard to God and taking a life, however, I strongly disagree with abortion.

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Dr David Thwaites (according to comments in the February 22 edition of The Gleaner) is advising the Church to stay out of the discussion on abortion! I wonder if he knows what the Church represents. It would seem that he doesn't even have a clue who God is.

Based on his words, which I quote here: "God should take care of God's business and the Government should work on behalf of the people." It is clear that although he claims to be part of the Anglican Church, he doesn't know God.

THE EDITOR, Sir:

One noted gynaecologist recently said on radio that every woman has regrets after an abortion. I have now begun to see another side - a hopeful side to the mention of regrets by women who have had abortions. While this is so sad on the one hand, it indicates to us that Jamaican women still have an active conscience.
