St Andrew triumph over Papine High
published: Friday | March 7, 2008

ST ANDREW High won the ISSA/Jamaica Hockey Federation Girls Under-19 title on Wednesday at the Mona Astro Turf, after clipping defending champs Papine High 1-0.

Racene Johnson put in a good all-round performance to help St Andrew win their first title in over a decade and was voted the most valuable player in the final.

However, for St Andrew's coach, Michelle Holt, her entire squad was the MVP.

"Every single player contributed to the win," Holt said. "From the goalkeeper to the backline to the midfield to the forwards. We were third last year and second the year before, so it's very fitting to be champs this year," she said.

St Andrew took the lead in the 10th minute through a Kysha Maitland goal and managed to hold on to the lead despite daring attempts from Papine, one of which hit the post at the start of the second half.

In the third-place play-off, Alpha beat Excelsior 2-1 with goals from Sherene Bankersingh and Genieve Smith. Sasha-Gayle Thomas scored for Excelsior.

The boys' final will be played today between Wolmer's and Munro College starting at 3:30 p.m.
