The inaugural staging of the 'Get on Track' exposition, by Choices in western Jamaica, received an overwhelming response from secondary schools last week, which has prompted the organisers to consider making it an annual career guide event.
General manager for Choices Career Advice, Angela deFreitas, said the objective of the career expo was to provide secondary students and school leavers with options on furthering their academics.
"We want the young people to leave here with a clearer understanding of who they are and what they can achieve in life with the educational opportunities offered to them locally through many institutions," deFreitas explained.
Captain Jhonny Pretel, of the Caribbean Maritime Institute, during his presentation at the career guide expo, urged students to consider a career in the shipping industry as there is a shortage of 10,000 persons in the industry worldwide.
"The earning potential is endless and so are the career options in this industry, so I encourage you to be a part of this exciting industry and realise your true potential," Pretel said.
Throughout the seminar, students were advised by business profes-sionals on what employers are looking for, how to prepare a proper résumé and cover letter and how to successfully get through an interview. Several career discussions by the Jamaica Defence Force, Jamaica Fire Brigade and the Jamaica Constabulary Force received active student participation.
