Go shopping at WROC!

On Friday, March 7, head to the Women's Resource and Outreach Centre (WROC), located at 47 Beechwood Avenue in Kingston, for their 25th anniversary celebration with a difference.

Activities will include entertainment and a farmer's market to be run by women in the client communities in Lyndhurst, Beechwood and St Thomas. All are also invited to WROC's anniversary church service at Webster Memorial on Sunday, March 9.

On Friday, enjoy the best fruits and vegetables fresh from the farm, as well as great Jamaican dishes cooked by the hardworking women and men. Proceeds will be in aid of WROC's advocacy programme.

Over the last 25 years, WROC has implemented several projects which have made a significant difference in the lives of the families in its client communities. These include health and wellness programmes for the women of Lyndhurst/Beechwood and nearby communities, as well as livelihood and personal development programmes. Its medical clinics, homework centre, CXC classes and livelihood training with an emphasis on sustainable development, have impacted the lives of many families.

Special milestone

"Having weathered the challenges since opening our doors at 47 Beechwood Avenue on March 8, 1983, we invite all of Jamaica to celebrate with us as we commemorate this very special milestone," says Linnette Vassell, chairperson.

WROC has also been active in advocacy as it seeks to increase the number of women who hold positions of leadership in Jamaica. Current projects include research into how boards are appointed in Jamaica.

In St Thomas, the organisation has been working to train chicken and cash-crop farmers in business development in that parish, as well as in Manchester and Kingston. They have also launched a sustainable roofing project which seeks to lessen the effects of hurricanes on our citizens. WROC will this year use the occasion of its anniversary to launch a new thrust in rights-based advocacy, which will complement its welfare activities.
