Thursday talk - Hottest topics on the cocktail circuit
published: Thursday | February 28, 2008

1. Things have changed for the better since the change of administration - at least for one minister - as his roadway has now been asphalted. His neighbours, though, have not been so lucky and must contend with huge potholes in the community.

2. His colleagues are now saying he has proven not to be a man of his word, with all that he 'shared' with them proving to be a pack of lies, causing those who rushed to his defence earlier to be left holding the bag.

3. They say the pressures of the office are of such that this person has taken up chain smoking and is complaining of how difficult it is to get anything done, despite his very best efforts. Others say that is so because the requisite personnel changes have not yet been carried through.

4. After the guest fell ill, the employee thought he was doing the prudent thing by sending him off to the hospital. Well, the credit card that was tendered was dishonoured and those in charge insisted that they won't be picking up the tab. So the employee saw a deduction from his last pay cheque to cover the costs incurred. Needless to say, he and his colleagues are not at all happy by this move by management.

5. Last time around, the invitations went out so late, most of those invited opted not to attend. This time they went out early enough, but lacked relevant information. So, faced with the dilemma of recalling those already in circulation, they have opted to follow up by calling those already in possession of the invites to provide them with the additional information. Needless to say, "we are not amused"!

6. The DG is being blamed for the spate of violence rocking the community since last year. What the people in the community are asking, however, is: 'Why have the police not done anything to control him?'

7. Some regard what the latest fishing expedition reeled in as 'small fry'. And so, they have their eyes set on some of the sharks still floating around out there. And there is a shortlist of those they would like to reel in, too, and it makes for very interesting reading.

8. There have been whisperings for some time now but, in the past few weeks, those whispers have grown so loud they are deafening. Seems all is not well within the ranks. There is talk of a split, with one player setting up a competing offshore investment scheme to rival his former partners. There is more talk that one has brought in a new 'partner' and is currently doing the rounds introducing him to the marketplace.

9. Remember J.A.G. Smith?

10. In times gone by, his admirers and detractors alike used to honour him. Now they are saying the complete opposite.
