Jamaican restaurant in China
published: Thursday | February 28, 2008

In the summer of 2007, the first Jamaican restaurant Cho-Cho was opened in Hangzhou, China. According to owner Glendon Thompson, this is the first Jamaican restaurant to be opened in the country of one billion people. Thompson, who is from Jamaica, lives in Atlanta.

His restaurant came from the desire to introduce the Jamaican culture to the Chinese in a personal way. "They knew we were track stars, but not much else. The Chinese love to eat and socialise. While they eat, they hear Jamaican and Caribbean music," he said.

So far, the restaurant has been big news in China and it was received positively. "We had a month of taste testing and found that the hottest of our food did not go over very well in this part of China, so we had to adjust," he explained. "So far, we are doing better than the other restaurants around in our area. It will take some time to build up the clientele," said Thompson.
