Young West Indies (WI) knocked out of World Cup
published: Saturday | February 23, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (CMC):

West Indies were dumped from the ICC Youth World Cup yesterday after India whipped them by 50 runs in a must-win match at Kinrara Academy Oval.

Chasing India's 265 for five off their 50 overs, the Windies crashed to 215 all out off 47.5 overs. The result confirmed South Africa as the team advancing - with India - from the group to the quarter-finals and condemned the Caribbean side to playing in the Plate (Consolation) event.

Darren Bravo top-scored with 43, Devon Thomas got 32 and Kieran Powell hit a breezy 29 but the regional side squandered a powerful position of 164 for four, losing their last six wickets for 51 runs.

medium-pace attack

Bravo and Thomas shared a 75-run stand for the fifth wicket but medium pacer Siddarth Kaul snatched three for 37 while medium pacer Ajitesh Argal and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja grabbed a brace of wickets each, to undermine the Windies run chase.

Needing to win the match and finish with a net run rate superior to South Africa's, West Indies made a favourable start to their run chase.

The attacking left-hander Powell smashed five hefty boundaries as West Indies sped to 44 in the sixth over. But, with the West Indies under pressure to win off 48 overs to lift their run rate, the 17-year-old Nevisian paid the price for his attacking approach and was dismissed for 29 off 20 balls.

Earlier, Virat Kohli slammed an even hundred in a captain's knock, and spurred India to their match-winning total.
