Thursday talk - Hottest topics on the cocktail circuit
published: Thursday | February 21, 2008

1. Some say the entire event, to begin with, was a tacky one from the start, with some of her colleagues laughing at the entire thing. Others are more than a little perplexed that what they considered a parochial event was so elevated that it actually saw the prime minister in attendance.

2. They dated for a number of years and she was beginning to feel a little shelf worn, so when someone else started paying her some attention, she sat up and took notice. It progressed to the point that the new man in her life proposed marriage and, as a sign of his intentions, presented her with a five-carat rock. The old flame, feeling things slipping away from him, upped the ante with a six-carat stone. She, in the meantime, is basking in the new-found attention.

3. They all tried to besmirch the good name of the family at the behest of the publicist. Well, they have all had to reach deep into their pockets for restitution. Of course, all the funds will be going to charity, but some are asking, will the publicist assist with paying the agreed fines or the legal bill?

4. All has not been well with the union for some time now. But they have been making attempts to show a unified team. Not anymore, however, as the wife is definitely house-hunting, and not for the family either, as she has decided on finally going solo.

5. The one now singing his praises as the greatest thing ever since Rasputin was not so long ago doing the circuit with a paper he purportedly got from his contacts in a certain embassy, listing him as one of the primary suspects in the export of our own version of 'winter vegetables'. She, on the other hand, has always said of him, "A never see, come see". Funny how things and times have changed!

6. He was recently denied entry into Canada and, more recently, denied entry into Florida. Those who know why aren't saying, and those who don't know are asking all around for answers.

7. Yet another cheque in the six-figure bracket has been returned for lack of sufficient funds to honour the paper on which it was written. It's all been kept very quiet, however, in the hope that those who issued it will soon make good, for fear of starting a stampede.

8. How did a former stripper come to be wielding such power and influence over respectable people?

9. With millions of dollars now at risk of going down the drain, she donned her most outlandish disguise to date - a blonde wig, spike heels and white stockings and a halter-back jumper suit - and climbed the stairs in the hope of getting some of the funds back. When none was forthcoming, she really went into character and reeled off so much cloth, 'even dogs catch dem fraid' and some say darkness fell on the glass palace.
