Spencer replaced
published: Monday | February 18, 2008

The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) has appointed a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) to oversee the constituency represented by embattled Member of Parliament Kern Spencer.

Joseph Allen, the constituency's representative on the NEC, has been installed as interim chairman.

He was selected late Friday at a meeting called by the chairman of the PNP's Region Five, Michael Peart, to discuss the way forward for the constituency.

The decision to replace the former state minister came less than 24 hours after Spencer announced that he would take leave from Parliament.

Public pressure has been mounting for Spencer to step aside in the wake of a damning report by the contractor general about his involvement in the controversial Cuban light-bulb programme.

Peart, yesterday, told The Gleaner that the decision to have Allen act as constituency chair in Spencer's absence was unanimous. "There was no kind of dissension or argument over the replacement," he said.

Meanwhile, the fledgling political party, the National Democratic Movement, has called for a commission of enquiry into the scandal.
