COOLIDGE, Antigua:

A CRUCIAL 105-run third-wicket stand between Jonathan Carter and Ryan Hinds sent Barbados into the semi-finals of the Stanford 20/20 tournament with an easy 54-run win over Grenada on Friday night.

In reply to Barbados' 152 for four, Grenada were dismissed for 98, batting one short.

Inserted by Grenada, Barbados, with the early losses of Patrick Browne (seven) and Dale Richards (two), were brought to life by Carter, who is yet to play first-class cricket, and Hinds, a West Indies discarded.

They batted with a great deal of determination and confidence to manipulate Grenada, who welcomed back the services of batsman Devon Smith and spinner Rawl Lewis from West Indies duties.

In the end, Carter top scored with 61, an innings laced with four sixes and as many fours off just 49 balls. Hinds, for the second match, ended unbeaten on 45.

lost wickets

In reply, Grenada lost wickets at regular intervals and were at one point 27 for five. They never recovered, especially with Smith (17) among the five early victims.

Camilus Alexander top scored with 20. Derrick Bishop 3-19 and Sulieman Benn 2-4 off four overs, took the most wickets.

Grenada's captain, Lewis, blamed his team's defeat on mistakes.

"We made too many mistakes in the field," Lewis said. "They probably made about 30 or 35 runs too much, but saying that, I think 150 was good," he added. "... But we needed a good start and we did not get that, wickets just kept falling, thus making it hard for you to play your normal game."

Barbados captain Dwayne Smith was pleased with his team's performance. He also praised the effort of Carter and Hinds, along with Benn, who opened the bowling.

"The guys put on a 105-run partnership, which was good for us," he said. "Carter went out there and did what was asked of him and again Benn gave us a good start with the ball."

Defending champions Guyana face hosts Antigua in tonight's final quarter-final match, also at the Stanford Cricket Ground.
