High-school students to experience life at Northern Caribbean University (NCU)
published: Sunday | February 17, 2008

Approximately 50 schools will be represented at this year's 'College Day', to be held on Tuesday at Northern Caribbean University (NCU). The annual event, which is coordinated by the Freshman Advisement and Recruitment Department of the university, facilitates the convergence of high-school students from across the island on the institution's main campus for a full day of exposure to the university's offerings.

Under the leadership of Mr. Andrew Thomas, director of freshman advisement and recruitment, the department structures the day's activities in a bid to sensitise the visiting students to the plethora of educational opportunities at the university, as well as to the culture and life at NCU.

According to April Lawrence, coordinator of freshman advisement and recruitment, College Day is important for many reasons. "College Day gives students a chance to become actively involved in the tertiary exploration process as they seek viable options for pursuing education at this level," says Lawrence. "It also showcases the university to the public by offering them the chance to share in our liberal arts atmosphere while promoting academic excellence among the future of the nation - our youth."

She adds that the event prepares students for the experiences they will encounter should they choose NCU, and enlightens them about the cultural and educational activities offered at the University that are geared towards stimulating intellect.

At this year's event, the students will be addressed by Ms Eva Forde, lecturer in the Behavioural Sciences Department, NCU. She is expected to motivate students and provide advice useful in achieving success. Guidance counsellors and principals accompanying the students will also be engaged in a specially arranged counselling sessions.

There will be various presentations by the university administration and other key personnel, along with musical presentations, departmental exhibits, guided campus tours and surprises and giveaways. The day's proceedings will culminate with a closing ceremony.
