Wary Ja face Nevis
published: Saturday | February 16, 2008

Anthony Foster, Freelance Reporter

St Mary's, Antigua:

Jamaica's cricketers aim to move a step closer towards the Stanford 20/20 US$1-million prize money when they take on Nevis in tonight's second quarter-final match at the Stanford Cricket Ground.

With this prize money at stake and a further US$500,000 for the winning cricket association, the Jamaica selectors went all out for the strongest Jamaica team possible, summoning captain Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Brenton Parchment, Daren Powell and Jerome Taylor for the clash.

They replaced Tamar Lambert, who led the team to an easy 118-run win over The Bahamas, Brendon Nash, Jermaine Lawson, André Russell and André McCarthy.

Coach Junior Bennett is well aware of what it takes to reach the final.

Good cricket is a must

"We have to treat every match as a final," he said of the knockout tournament, which started on January 26 with 20 teams. "We have to go out there and play good cricket because every team has improved since last year."

Nevis, a surprise semi-finalist last year, will be no walkover and Bennett is also aware of this small island's capabilities.

"Nevis is always a decent team."

However, the Jamaican squad, which has a very good mixture of seven specialist batsmen and an all-rounder in David Bernard Jr, two spinners - Nikita Miller and Odean Brown - pacers Daren Powell and Jerome Taylor, and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh, a very good hitter of the ball, will wait until the final minute to determine their final eleven.

"The pitch is important to determine the composition of our team ... All the pitches play differently," Bennett noted.

In any case, Gayle, Parchment, Samuels and Danza Hyatt, who scored 73 against The Bahamas, should lead Jamaica's batting while pacers Taylor and Powell will spear-headed the bowling, which also has several spin options.

West Indies batsman Runako Morton will spearhead Nevis' batting and should receive support from Tonito Willett, Javid Liburd and captain Joel Simmonds, who said they hope to continue from where they left off against Montserrat.

"Our aim is to go out there and play good cricket against Jamaica," Simmonds said while admitting the Jamaicans will start as favourites. Teams

JAMAICA - Chris Gayle (captain), Brenton Parchment, Xavier Marshall, Shawn Findlay, Danza Hyatt, Marlon Samuels, Wavell Hinds, Carlton Baugh, Dave Bernard, Nikita Miller, Odean Brown, Daren Powell, Jerome Taylor.
