The Editor, Sir:Your paper at all times seeks the opinion of us citizens on matters affecting the welfare of this country, and I wish to crave your indulgence. On the matter of food for the country, especially in time of crisis - and we are in a crisis situation. One of our staple foods is rice, and we were once growers of this commodity, saving valuable foreign exchange. Both administrations over the past 30 years categorically stated that it is cheaper to import rather than to grow it ourselves. The logic of this is incomprehensible as the Government will only be a facilitator by using its research arm to guide its field technocrats in trials of the best varieties, disease and pest control, and leave production to capable farmers. If we can grow a third of our consumption, utilising the idle lands in St Catherine, Westmoreland, St Elizabeth and Clarendon, our target can be achieved.War on drugs
We are very mindful of the ever increasing interest of the young people in these areas who desire to plant cannabis (ganja), with all the unending risks. With two to three crops of rice per year under guidance, the battle should begin for a total war on drugs. With the zeal of the new administration, it is hoped that a new look should be taken at the viability of this crop to save much-needed foreign exchange and to fill the empty bellies.Research materials are at the Ministry of Agriculture, Hope Gardens, and some of the researchers are still with us. Let us act now for good governance, and feed our nation.I am, etc.,L.B. RHODEN, JPWestmoreland
