Thursday talk - Hottest topics on the cocktail circuit
published: Thursday | February 14, 2008

Time's up

1. Some say she thought she had them fooled, but when she was asked to vacate her office to make way for the unelected one, then, they knew, they were on to her and it would be only a matter of time. Well, the letter of termination arrived this week, making it clear that not only were they on to her, but the game was up.

Party-poopers

2. One guest at a high-profile function recently, was overheard remarking that he had actually been to funerals that were by far way more exciting than the 'party' he was attending. Sadly, others in attendance agreed with the statement. The moral of the story - never try to do a high-profile party on the cheap.

Errand boy cops

3. The security officers are none too pleased with their new assignments. It seems that, instead of protecting, they are being asked to serve as go-fors and errand boys, fetching groceries and any little thing the lady fancies. However, it is her attitude of entitlement and sense of arrival which is provoking a near-sense of mutiny within the ranks.

Crowded house

4. The cosy little twosome became a little crowded and it came to a crashing end, with all kinds of mud-slinging and name-calling, with even the friends being asked to take sides, and all because of the indiscretion of one of the partners with the tradesman.

High-society shocker

5. They both checked in as Mr and Mrs So-and-So, from a very posh stateside address; he, looking like a very proper gentleman and she, like a '60s-styled glamour girl, and were pretty much the toast of other guests as they made the rounds. It all went south, however, when the couple decided on going for a swim and the wife opted to wear 'her' bikini. Suffice it to say, the staffers are still in a state of shock and revulsion, as it was a case of the sister turning out to be a brother!

Slinking away

6. She has gone into hiding, hoping the storm over her behaviour will blow over. The only problem here is that some would like to see her behind bars for her transgressions and dodgy accounting.

Cry me a River

7. Now we know why he bawled like a baby. But where were the PS and the minister?

The bell tolls

8. Lots of tears all around as the political guillotine is starting to fall, and fall heavily too, as lots of contracts and assignments are now being terminated across the board, and is the cause for growing distress among the affected. It seems that many who have given years and decades of service in some instances are being fired left, right and centre, and with little warning.

Tax free?

9. Were they given tax-exempt status or not? If so, why?

Alternative motives

10. It seems that they objected to the former administration divesting itself of its holdings in the partnership, because they did not want to open up their books to the scrutiny of a potential purchaser. Now that there is a new administration, and there is still a shortage of cash to finance new and old projects, those closest to the deal are befuddled as to why no steps have been taken to date to offload the portfolio and cash in on the needed windfall the sale would bring in.
