With the recent debates surrounding the legalisation of abortion, The Gleaner took to the streets of the Corporate Area yesterday to get the views of women on the matter.
Jamila Henry
Women should be given the choice to decide what they want to do with their bodies. In some cases, I think abortion should be done, especially where the woman was raped or in situations of incest. I hear about a nine-year-old girl who got pregnant after having unprotected sex and I wouldn't want a nine-year-old having a child. Abortion, in that case, is warranted.
Akelia Gordon
It's better to get rid of it early than to let it come into the world and suffer. If you do it before the pregnancy reaches two months, I don't think that it's murder, cause I don't believe a baby develop yet. The man has a say in the matter, but it is ultimately the woman's decision. I think abortion should be legalised.
Grace McDonald
Abortion should not be legalised. That child could be a future Bob Marley or the future Prime Minister. Jamaicans are people with great potential, so you never know who you are getting rid of. I think the Government should pay more attention to public education to inform young girls on preventative measures. Prevention should be first priority.
Trecia Bedward
I think abortion is a moral issue and it's more a personal decision. It's up to the woman to decide whether or not she believes it's something she wants to do, but I think legalising it would be taking it a step too far. If you think that you are not in a position to care for a child then you should take preventative measures. There is so much information out there and so many different forms of contraceptives.
Jessica Jarrett
It's a matter of giving the woman options. If it is legalised then the woman is given choices. A child at the wrong time can affect a woman's career or spoil certain plans and I think the woman has a right to choose what she wants.
Kenisha Leban
A child is a gift from God. Not every woman can have a child and so when you are given that chance, you should not take it lightly. If you know you are not ready for a baby then use protection. Women should be more cautious.
Shanice Warren
If abortion is legalised I think many women will use it as a form of contraception, which it is not. The fact is, if it is legalised because women are using unprofessional doctors who are not doing it properly, those doctors will still be there when it is legalised. They will be offering abortions at a cheaper price so more women are going to go to them anyway.
