STEPHEN Marley's Mind Control won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album, Sunday, at the 50th Grammy Awards, held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

It beat out The Burning Spear Experience by Burning Spear; Anniversary by Sly and Robbie; Lee 'Scratch' Perry's The End of An American Dream and Light Your Light by Toots and The Maytals.

The win came one week after what would have been his father's (reggae legend Bob Marley) 63rd birthday.

Bob Marley died in May 1981 at the age of 36.

Great reviews

Mind Control was released in March, last year it was not a major seller, it got strong reviews from leading publications like Rolling Stone magazine which said Stephen Marley 'does justice to Bob Marley's legacy'.

Stephen Marley is the third Marley son to win a Best Reggae Album award as a solo act. His older brother, Ziggy, won last year for Love Is My Religion, while younger sibling Damian's Half-Way Tree and Welcome to Jamrock won in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

Stephen produced Half-Way Tree and Welcome to Jamrock. He also won three Best Reggae Album Grammys with the group, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.

On February 23, Stephen Marley will be among several reggae acts performing at the Smile Jamaica/Africa Unite concert at James Bond Beach in Oracabessa, St Mary.
