Night noises unabated
published: Monday | February 11, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

When I saw the headline 'All-night sessions robbing children of parental guidance' with a photo of Informa-tion Minister Olivia 'Babsy' Grange below, I felt relieved that a minister of government had finally seen the light.

However, my elation was short-lived as Ms Grange did not appeal to people to show consideration for others by observing the Night Noise Abatement Act which clearly states that all dances, etc, must end by 2:00 a.m. In fact, the current trend is for the volume to be turned up between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m.

Each Tuesday morning as I drive up Hagley Park Road when Early Mondayz is ending, I weep for the children who live in the vicinity of that dance because I'm sure they cannot stay awake during their classes. It is also quite possible that they are irritable and prone to violent reactions at the slightest provocation due to lack of sleep.

When are our politicians going to really do something about this nuisance? Does it not occur to any of them that we have too many unemployed people in this country, that's why dances can be held until 6:00 a.m. on a daily basis? How do these people support themselves if they are sleeping all day and partying all night instead of working and being productive? Something is very wrong with this picture.

I am, etc.,

KAREN HENRY
