Red has always been the colour of love. And every February 14 (celebrated as Valentine's Day) red and white takes over the fashion world.

It can be safe to say that red became the popular colour for Valentine's Day because that was the colour of the rose given on the day. The word rose is derived from the Roman word 'Rosa' which means red.

Traditionally, red roses were given as a sign of love.

But red on Valentine's Day is not only for roses but the colour is also popularly used for clothing.

While many persons start to wear red days before the 14th, it doesn't have to take over your entire wardrobe especially if you are not a fan of the colour. Plus, unlike Easter and Christmas, Valentine's is not a season, it is simply a day for lovers.

So, this year, why not reduce the red and go for some subtle hints instead? A pair of red shoes, a handbag, belt or scarf can perfectly complement any outfit you choose in a range of colours from black to grey.

This week Flair shows you ways to incorporate a little red without going over the top.
