Guyana terror crisis
published: Monday | February 11, 2008

GEORGETOWN (CMC):

Amid deteriorating security here, presidential adviser on governance, Gail Teixeira, has said Guyana is confronted by sophisticated and politically motivated criminal gangs that are bent on terrorism.

In a recent television programme aired on the state-owned National Communications Network, Teixeira, who is also a former home affairs minister, pointed out that unlike other countries with high crime rates, where the activity has no direct threat to the state, the local situation is the opposite.

"Guyana has a specific criminal gang, organised for the past six years traditionally using the Buxton corridor on the East Coast, supported by a network of satellite cells in various villages throughout the country to carry out terrorism and murder to achieve political objectives," she stressed.
