STETHS take on 20/20 squad today

THE STAGE is set for an afternoon of high-quality cricket when a strong St. Elizabeth Technical squad hosts members of the current Jamaica 20/20 squad in that version of the game in Santa Cruz today.

The game starts at 1:00 p.m. at the STETHS playing field and will feature players who are all part of the pool for selection to national senior teams.

Used for selections

The Jamaica team selected includes 10 members of the XI which defeated the Bahamas by 118 runs in the lucarative Stanford 20/20 tournament last Wednesday.

The excluded player, Shawn Findlay, who opened with Xavier Marshall, will captain the STETHS XI.

Several players are likely to use today's match-up as a chance to push for the few remaining toss-up spots, given the expected inclusion of the West Indies players when Jamaica next take the field in the Stanford 20/20 match later this week.

Two of those players, pacers Darren Powell and Jerome Taylor, will line-up for the their school team.

Jamaican coach Junior Bennett, on Thursday, was noticeably keen on the pitch preparation for today's game, and fielded questions from curious onlookers.

He was heard saying there was likely to be some difficult decisions taken when the Jamaican selectors meet to select the side for the next Stanford 20/20 game.

Keith Wellington, vice-principal of St. Elizabeth Technical, is one of the chief organisers behind the game and told The Sunday Gleaner that the match-up was always in the making, given the presence of so many former STETHS players in the national programme and the obvious linkage with coach Bennett.

Spectators will be charged a fee of $200 and final proceeds will be divided between the S. Elizabeth parish team and the school's Headley Cup programme.

Jamaica squad: T. Lambert (captain), Xavier Marshall, Danza Hyatt, W. Hinds, D. Bernard Jr., Carlton Baugh Jr., B. Nash, O. Brown, J. Lawson, A. McCarthy, A. Russell, J. Robinson, D. Sinclair, Y. Elliott.
