NOTE-WORTHY: PNP image
published: Friday | February 8, 2008

PNP image

Regarding the Cuban light bulb affair, I believe your editorial, 'Let the chips fall where they may', is on the mark. While Kern Spencer has not been found guilty of any wrongdoing (so far) it's not as if he'll come out of this scandal smelling like a rose.

His actions in this matter cannot be attributed, nor should it be, to 'youthful exuberance' or exuberance of any kind. Mea culpas and crying in Parliament just do not cut it anymore. It is high time for the PNP to regain some semblance of respectability.

This is one of those seminal moments in the life of the PNP where addition by subtraction can only help in burnishing and restoring its image if it is serious about combating corruption.

Wake up, Jamaica

As more and more Jamaicans seek work overseas and eventually become citizens of another country to later return home to be able to have a better life through their savings and can, through their knowledge acquired abroad, contribute to improve life in their country, it will become impossible for these Jamaicans to do so as Jamaica has not amended its constitution to allow any born Jamaican to be part of the country's politics because he or she may have an additional nationality.

The world has shrunk, and Jamaica is behind the times. All that should matter is that the Jamaican born has the will, ethics and morals to help his/her people to a better life in whatever manner they serve. Wake up, Jamaica.

Point of history

I refer to the first item in the 'This day in our history' column published on January 9, 2008, Page C6.

The incident involving Obediah Bell Chambers said to have been killed at Struie, at the border of St James and Westmoreland.

This is not so. Struie is deep in eastern Westmoreland and the neighbouring districts are Bethel Town, Cornwall Mountains, Barney Side and Cedar Grove, to name a few. Obediah's head was buried some one mile away from the body.

The tombstone of the head is still there at Struie, St James. Nearest points are Cambridge and Catadupa, some 12 miles away.
