Gov't should control fertility
published: Wednesday | February 6, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Government should have power over fertility in Jamaica. I don't see why a woman who is not free to walk the streets naked should be free to have any number of children she wants.

Think about it - five 'unplanned for' kids could do (and is currently doing) far more harm to society than a woman sporting a naked body.

I throw my support behind the article in The Gleaner titled 'Too Many Unfit Parents'.

What the writer suggests could help to solve the problem of 'unwanted children' in the streets, that ultimately leads to criminals.

Having children in Jamaica should not be left up to the individual; it should be at the discretion of the government. No woman/girl should be allowed to have two children if her standard of living cannot properly and adequately maintain them at least up to high school level.

Determine financial ability

My solution is this: if a girl or woman enters the hospital for delivery and her financial background is not up to standard, then, after delivery, she must be subject to mandatory, temporary or permanent tubal ligation or hysterectomy until her situation improves.

Only then should she resume having children at the govern-ment's discretion.

I am, etc.,
