Four U-21 teams hunt final berth
published: Friday | January 25, 2008

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Four teams - Portmore United, Arnett Gardens, Sporting Central and St. Georges - will battle for one spot as the race for a place in the Coca-Cola Under-21 (U-21) National League end-of-round final is set to go down to the wire.

Harbour View who have 22 points from nine games have already booked a spot in the final as they cannot be mathematically bumped out of the top two.

However, the team that will join the Stars of the East in the final, which will take place prior to the Cash Plus Premier League second end-of-round final on February 10, is pretty much anybody's guess.

Defending champions Portmore, who are on 19 points, already have one foot in the door and they could all but secure the spot when they tackle struggling last place club Village United at 3:00 p.m. today at the Elliston Wakeland Centre.

Their final game of the round would then be against a second to last August Town who are yet to win a single game the St. Catherine team appear a cinch to wrap up the spot, nothing is certain in the game of football.

No one will know this better than third place Arnett Gardens and, on 15 points they will be looking for maximum points when they travel to face St. Georges, who are fifth on 14 points, in a 3:00 p.m. fixture at Lynch Park.

The venue has been a fortress for the Portland team so far this season and albeit with just a slim shot of making it to the end of round final, the task will be a tough one for the 'Junglists'.

One spot above St. Georges, Sporting Central find themselves in a similar position. Also on 14 points, they are in must win situation when they travel to Collie Smith Drive to face seventh-place Boys' Town.

In the day's other game, Harbour View, who have lost only one game so far this season, will not only be hoping to finish the round on top but will have revenge on their minds when they host rivals Waterhouse at Drews-land at 6:00 p.m.
