Bloomfield

Following on the heels of the legendary Eileen Cliggott last October and Neville Cousley on January 4, yet another veteran trainer has passed away. He is Lorenzo Bloomfield who died on the morning of Monday, January 14, in the Spanish Town Hospital, St. Catherine, at age 73.

Bloomfield took up training in the 70s an not active in his profession for the past seven years, saddled 43 winners.

His last winner was MAN-DEVILLE ROSE under Shane Ellis on September 11, 1999, after which he was suspended by the Jamaica Racing Commission.

That year he saddled eight winners, including RULING TUDOR (twice), SIR RAJA RAEBY with Andrew Ramgeet aboard, TOOYOUNGTODIE under leading all-time jockey Winston Griffiths, MR. CHIPS with Ramon Parish aboard, TURKISH PRINCE and of course, MANDEVILLE ROSE.

Among his other winners over the years were CHRISTOPHER LEE (three times), ZANDOR (twice), AFTER EFFECT (twice), RETROSPECT, IMPERIAL COMMANDER, FORGETFUL, IMPECCABLE, WILD FUN, MAGELLAN, GENERAL AVERAGE, NORTHERN ROSE and SYB'S D.

Vin Edwards, president of the Jamaica Racehorse Trainers' Association, extended condolences to his family on behalf of the association, saying the trainer made his contribution in his own small way.

Bloomfield is survived by many children (including Terence, a groom at Caymanas Park), grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements will be made public at a later date.
