Atkinson closes in on Olympic mark
published: Wednesday | January 23, 2008

Overseas-based national senior swimmer, Jevon Atkinson, finished 0.41 seconds off the Olympic qualifying standard (23.45), while placing first in the 50m freestyle in a time of 23.86 at the recently concluded Coral Spring Swim Club Senior Circuit Swim Meet in Coral Springs, Florida, over the weekend.

Atkinson, who swam on the 2004 Jamaica Olympic team, also placed second in the 50m butterfly in a time of 27.06 and third in both the 50m backstroke and the 100m freestyle in a time of 29.93 and 53.81, respectively.

Swimming at the senior level for the first time, local-based representative Kendese Nangle set a new national senior record at the same meet and a new 13-14 age-group record of 32.05 seconds in the 50m backstroke, in which she placed third, trimming a fraction off the previous best of 32.08 seconds.

In her other events, Nangle placed sixth in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:12.24 and eighth in the 50m butterfly in a time of 31.36 seconds.

Dominic Walter placed fifth in the 1500m freestyle in a time of 17:20.89, while national swimmer Victoria Ho, competing for her U.S. club, Fast, placed seventh in a time of 29.03 in the 50m freestyle.

This is the first in a series of overseas competitions for the swimmers as they prepare for the second Federation Internationale de Natation World Youth Swimming Championships to be held from July 8-13 in Monterrey, Mexico.
