Waulgrovians 'A' burn Arnett Gardens 42-21
published: Monday | January 21, 2008

Anthony Minott, Freelance Reporter

What was billed as the feature match in the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA)/ Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) Open League quarter-finals quickly turned into a no-contest between Waulgrovians 'A' and Arnett Gardens at the Leila Robinson courts on Saturday evening.

Waulgrovians, led by accurate shooting from Simone Forbes 22 goals from 24 attempts, Suzette Desouza 16/18 and Oberon Pitterson a perfect 4/4 whipped Arnett Gardens 42-21, to set up a semi-final date with defending champions Tivoli Gardens 'A' who easily disposed of Blades United 35-18.

"It was an easy game, we used our experience to beat them. I think the playing combinations worked fairly well but we still have a lot to do," Patrick Brissett, coach of Waulgrovians said after the game.

Fast game

Waulgrovians played a fast game and soon rushed to an 8-1 lead, this they maintained to the end of the quarter with a sizeable 14-5 lead. The second quarter was no different as they opened up a 13-point advantage (24-11), at the half.

Waulgrovians didn't let up in the second half scoring 10 and eight points in the last two quarters to Arnett's seven and three points output.

Kadian Mendez 12 from 16 and Shelly-Ann Williams eight from 12 scored most points for Arnett. Arnett's coach Everton Samuels was quite disappointed with his team's level of play.

"I'm disappointed with how my team played. Not that we expected to run over Waulgrovians but the attitude of the players was not what I expected."

One-sided affair

The most competitive quarter-final game of the big four, was the Windalco/Jetsetter 'A' encounter, in the first quarter-final game, with the former eking out a 27-23 victory. Windalco's sister team, Jamalco, had a one-sided 45-13 triumph over Speg 'A' in quarter-final two. Romeldo Aiken led all scorers, with 22 from 30 attempts and Margaret Lawrence sunk 15 of her 22 attempts, while Marsha Murphy led Blades with eight goals from 10 tries. Windalco will face Jamalco in next Saturday's semi-final.

Tivoli 'A' who led Blades in all quarters 9-3, 18-9, 24-15, 35-18 got a big boost from the shooting prowess of Cleopatra Grant with 30 goals from 35 attempts, while her shooting partner, Jodian French, scored five of seven.

In the Consolation knock-out games, Skibo 'B' turned back Hampshire 'A' 24-21, Police "A" crushed Alexander 32-16 and Alpha "A" got by Maxfield Park 26-22 in a close encounter.
