Surinamese teachers end one-month strike
published: Monday | January 21, 2008

PARAMARIBO (CMC):

Teachers last week ended a month-long strike after sealing a 10 per cent pay rise deal with the Suriname Government.

The state has sought to address concerns that the time lost would affect studies covered in the curriculum.

Minister of Education Edwin Wolf maintains that the government will do its utmost to prevent students becoming victims of the stagnancy over the past weeks. He indicated, however, that the ministry "won't fiddle with the curriculum" in order for more students to get through.

During several rounds of lengthy negotiations an agreement was struck last Thursday. Both the teachers and government agreed to resume talks over outstanding issues later this year.
