Tivoli aftermath
published: Thursday | January 17, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I have been listening and watching with interest, the public and media reactions to the latest security forces action in Tivoli Gardens. History proves that this type of action is nothing new and seems to me almost predictable, when we recall that the Police Commissioner Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, in his position as army chief, had publicly declared that Tivoli was the "Mother of all Garrisons".

He just did not say that when he was appointed to the powerful position of commissioner of police what his plans for the 'Mother' would be. Are we now witnessing some portion of these plans as details of the recent raid in this area unfold?

Things that stand out in my opinion are:

1) Where is the input that one would expect from the highly paid 'foreign police' regarding forensic procedures, if nothing else?

2) Should Desmond McKenzie, the councillor for that division, have given public support to these actions without more investigation, if one is to believe the cries of anguish emanating from citizens on radio talk shows who claim to have been there or witnesses to what appears to have been brutal actions on the part of the security forces.

3) Will the PM and MP who represents this area, Bruce Golding, publicly demand further investigation regarding what on the surface seems to be excessive force against citizens, including those whom he represents?

I am, etc.,

'Caring Citizen'
