Government positives should be commended
published: Thursday | January 3, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

There have been many negative comments levelled at the Bruce Golding-led administration since its ascendancy to the helm of power; while it is important to be critical of our leadership in ensuring transparency, it is equally important to highlight the positives to offer encouragement and hope for the future. It is with this in mind that I applaud the administration in ensuring continuance in the civil service.

We have long had a history of dismantling the leadership of the civil service whenever there is a change in government. Many of us, however, are well aware that some persons may have to be discharged as a review of the ministries and agencies is done. The Jamaica Labour Party-led Government should also be commended for continuing many of the programmes and projects started by the previous administration. In continuing these programmes and projects, the Government is ensuring continuance, which is vital to stability and growth; this no doubt, augurs well for the future.

Strong democracy in JA

I stand a proud Jamaican in my country's maturing democracy, as we continue to adhere to its tenets. There are many states which gained independence both before and during the period Jamaica gained hers, however, they are not as stable. I am extremely proud of our smooth transition in governance exhibited since 1944. There is no question that we have had anxious moments along the way (which country has not?); however, we continue to resolve them.

It is important that it may never be forgotten that in ensuring that our democracy continues to mature, we must work together as one Jamaica, noting that disagreements will always arise, but how we approach them is critical in ensuring our stability as a nation.

As we watch the developments unfold in Kenya and Pakistan, which are both Commonwealth states, we are reminded that democracy is very delicate. We should resist the urge to partisanship by becoming nation builders, by being Jamaican first and, thereafter, affiliates to our political party(s).

I remain hopeful in the ability of my people as they continue to strive for excellence and national stability within the global village.

I am, etc.,

CHERYL DWYER
