Firearms for self-defence
published: Thursday | January 3, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Shawn Johnson's letter advocating the liberalisation of Jamaican firearms law is right on!

I have for years advocated allowing law-abiding citizens to own firearms for self-protection, instead of the current regime that leaves us vulnerable like lambs to the slaughter.

In Florida, where law-abiding citizens can be issued permits to carry concealed weapons (no permits are required to own a firearm), violent crime dropped 20 per cent in the first two years, compared to the days of restrictions.

The Government has failed miserably to protect Jamaicans from crime and, frankly, I believe that we are personally responsible for our own safety.

Allow us the tools to protect ourselves.

I am, etc.,
