Aunt May deserves more for age 110
published: Monday | December 31, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am writing regarding a previous letter printed in The Gleaner on December 21, regarding Aunt May (110 years old), who died December 1, eight days short of her 111th birthday on Christmas Day. I think Jamaica should honour her more than a mere tribute in The Gleaner but should show support to the families and to her legacy by doing more. I think a representative from government should attend the funeral and offer to honour her in a dignified way for the mere fact that she lived to 110 years.

I am in the United States and would like to see the Jamaican Government honour this woman in a dignified way. Perhaps the Member of Parliament for her constituency can arrange something in honour of her. Mr. Editor we must not take likely a life so amazing and well spent. I am to understand that this woman was not only well-aged but she was blind for most of her life. This to me is honourable and noble. What will we do to honour such a matriarch of Jamaica?

I am, etc.,

Dr. JEROME HAMMOND
