Nicolas Cage led the North American box office for a second weekend with his National Treasure sequel, while the teen comedy Juno raced up the rankings despite playing in limited release.
According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, Walt Disney Pictures' National Treasure: Book of Secrets sold US$35.6 million worth of tickets in the three days beginning December 28, taking its 12-day haul to US$124 million. Cage stars as a treasure hunter who flies around the world trying to solve an ancient puzzle related to Lincoln's assassination.
The surprise smash Alvin and the Chipmunks moved up one place to number two with US$30 million, as the total for the 20th Century Fox kids movie about the helium-voiced critters rose to US$142.4 million after three weekends.
Former champ I Am Legend slipped one place to number three with US$27.5 million. Warner Bros.' Will Smith sci-fi thriller has earned US$194.6 million, also after three weekends.
The political comedy Charlie Wilson's War held steady at number four with US$11.8 million, a 22 per cent improvement on its modest debut last weekend. The 10-day haul for Universal Pictures' Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts vehicle now stands at US$34.5 million.
Juno jumped five places to number five with US$10.3 million after tripling the number of theatres to 990. The Fox Searchlight comedy will expand to about 2,000 theatres next weekend. Its total, after four weekends, rose to US$25.7 million.
